In the morning they traveled on (по утру они продолжили путешествие) until they came to a thick wood (пока они не пришли к густому лесу; thick — толстый, полный; густой, частый).

The first day's journey was through the green fields and bright flowers that stretched about the Emerald City on every side.
They slept that night on the grass, with nothing but the stars over them; and they rested very well indeed.

So they looked for the place where it would be easiest to get into the forest.

20. The Dainty China Country (изящная фарфоровая страна)
While the Woodman was making a ladder from wood which he found in the forest (пока Дровосек делал лестницу из древесины, которую он нашел = взял в лесу) Dorothy lay down and slept (Дороти прилегла и заснула), for she was tired by the long walk (потому что она устала от долгой прогулки). The Lion also curled himself up to sleep (Лев также свернулся /калачиком/, чтобы поспать) and Toto lay beside him (и Тото прилег около него).
The Scarecrow watched the Woodman while he worked (Страшила смотрел на Дровосека, в то время как тот работал), and said to him (и сказал ему): "I cannot think why this wall is here (я не могу понять, ни почему здесь /стоит/ эта стена), nor what it is made of (ни из чего она сделана)."
"Rest your brains and do not worry about the wall (дай отдых своим мозгам и не беспокойся о стене)," replied the Woodman.

While the Woodman was making a ladder from wood which he found in the forest Dorothy lay down and slept, for she was tired by the long walk. The Lion also curled himself up to sleep and Toto lay beside him.
The Scarecrow watched the Woodman while he worked, and said to him: "I cannot think why this wall is here, nor what it is made of."
"Rest your brains and do not worry about the wall," replied the Woodman.
"When we have climbed over it (когда мы через нее перелезем), we shall know what is on the other side (мы узнаем, что на другой стороне)." After a time the ladder was finished (спустя некоторое время лестница была закончена). It looked clumsy (выглядела она топорно; clumsy — неуклюжий, неповоротливый; грубый, топорный), but the Tin Woodman was sure it was strong (но Железный Дровосек был уверен, что она была прочной; strong — сильный; прочный) and would answer their purpose (и отвечала их цели = и годилась /для того, чтобы с ее помощью перелезть через стену/; purpose — цель, намерение; to answer one’s purpose — соответствовать своему назначению, подходить, годиться).
The Scarecrow waked Dorothy and the Lion and Toto (Страшила разбудил Дороти, Льва и Тото), and told them that the ladder was ready (и сказал им, что лестница /была/ готова). The Scarecrow climbed up the ladder first (Страшила первым поднялся по лестнице), but he was so awkward (но он был таким неуклюжим) that Dorothy had to follow close behind and keep him from falling off (что Дороти пришлось двигаться непосредственно вслед за ним, чтобы не дать ему упасть; close — близко, рядом, около; to keep smb. from doing smth. — мешать, препятствовать кому-либо делать что-либо). When he got his head over the top of the wall the Scarecrow said (когда его голова оказалась над стеной: «над верхней частью стены», Страшила сказал), "Oh, my (вот это да; oh, my — /сокр. от. my God!, my goodness, my eye, etc./ — вот тебе на! подумать только! /выражает удивление, испуг, восхищение/)!"
