Дилан Томас. Рука подписала бумажку[155], 1936Вы, дорогой читатель, разумеется, никогда, ни за какие коврижки не прибегли бы к яду, правда ведь? Только вы должны подтвердить это как полагается: поднять руку и в знак согласия пошевелить пальцами…
Вот и попались! Уже одно то, что у вас есть чем шевелить (я имею в виду пальцы), выдает вашу ложь. Я еще в начале книги сказал, что все мы — дети яда, яд присутствовал не только в нашем недавнем прошлом, но и в нашем отдаленном будущем, и именно наши пальцы говорят нам об этом, те самые пальцы, благодаря которым мы стали людьми… Их сформировал яд, притом яд совершенно особого, удивительного сорта, он был приложен, клетка за клеткой, к куску плоти, обычной перепонке, ласте, которая разделяла этот кусок на пять полос, которые стали впоследствии пальцами руки. Процесс апоптоза (утраты клеток) не только защищает нас от рака, но также и придает нам форму, как в случае формирования пальцев рук.
Действия апоптоза изысканно точны, и поэтому одна из Нобелевских премий 2002 года была присуждена Сиднею Бреннеру, Роберту Хорвицу и Джону Салстону за их открытия, касающиеся «генетического регулирования развития органов и программируемой гибели клеток» — комитет по Нобелевским премиям предпочел такую длинную формулировку вместо короткой и простой: явление апоптоза. Большая часть этой работы велась в связи с открытием, что нематода (червь Caenorhabditis elegans), длиной не более миллиметра, состоит из 1090 клеток, однако разрушает 131 из них, чтобы сформировать организм, в котором было бы точно 959 клеток.
И этот же принцип применим ко всем живым существам: тщательное, аккуратное использование яда, то есть апоптоз, формирует человека по мере его развития, а также поддерживает в нас жизнь, а ведь тридцать лет назад мы ничего об этом не знали. Яды, судя по всему, еще не раз удивят нас в будущем.
