Agatha Christie -
miserable [ˈmɪzǝrǝbl], cringe [krɪnʤ], bleary [ˈblɪǝrɪ]
"It's the man Ascher, sir. We've brought him in."
"Right. Bring him in here. Where was he?"
"Hiding in a truck on the railway siding."
"He was, was he? Bring him along."
Franz Ascher was indeed a miserable and unprepossessing specimen.
He was blubbering and cringing and blustering alternately. His bleary eyes moved shiftily from one face to another.
"What do you want with me (что вы от меня хотите)? I have not done nothing (я ничего не сделал). It is a shame and a scandal to bring me here (это позор и скандал — приводить меня сюда)! You are swine (вы свиньи), how dare you (как вы смеете)?" His manner changed suddenly "No, no, I do not mean that (я не имею в виду, что) — you would not hurt a poor old man (вы не причините вреда бедному старику) — not be hard on him (не будете строги с ним; to be hard on — быть строгим, суровым; круто обходиться). Everyone is hard on poor old Franz (все круто обходятся с бедным старым Францем). Poor old Franz (бедный старый Франц)."
Mr. Ascher started to weep
"That'll do, Ascher," said the inspector "Pull yourself together (возьмите себя в руки: «стяните себя вместе»). I'm not charging you with anything (я ни в чем вас не обвиняю) — yet (пока). And you're not bound to make a statement (вы не обязаны делать заявление; to be bound to — быть обязанным, склонным; to bind — связывать; обязывать) unless you like (если сами не захотите; unless — если не; пока не). On the other hand (с другой стороны), if you're not concerned in the murder of your wife (если вы не имеете отношения к убийству своей жены) — "

Ascher interrupted him (Эшер прервал его) — his voice rising to a scream (его голос /при этом/ перерос в крик; to rise — подниматься). "I did not kill her (я не убивал ее)! I did not kill her! It is all lies (это все ложь)! You are goddamned English pigs (вы проклятые английские свиньи) — all against me (все против меня). I never kill her (я никогда = вовсе не убивал ее) — never."
"You threatened to often enough, Ascher (вы слишком часто угрожали, Эшер)."
"No, no. You do not understand (вы не понимаете). That was just a joke (это была просто шутка) — a good joke between me and Alice (хорошая шутка между мною и Элис). She understood (она понимала; to understand)."

Ascher interrupted him — his voice rising to a scream. "I did not kill her! I did not kill her! It is all lies! You are goddamned English pigs — all against me. I never kill her — never."
"You threatened to often enough, Ascher."
"No, no. You do not understand. That was just a joke — a good joke between me and Alice. She understood."
"Funny kind of joke (хорошенькая шутка: «забавный вид шутки»)! Do you care to say (не хотите / позаботитесь ли вы сказать) where you were yesterday evening, Ascher (где вы были вчера вечером, Эшер)?"
"Yes, yes — I tell you everything (я скажу вам все). I did not go near Alice (я не приближался к Элис). I am with friends (я с моими друзьями) — good friends (хорошими друзьями). We are at the Seven Stars (мы все в «Семи Звездах») — and then we are at the Red Dog (а затем мы все /пошли/ в «Красную Собаку») —"
He hurried on (он заторопился), his words tumbling over each other (его слова спотыкались друг о друга).
"Dick Willows (Дик Уиллоуз) — he was with me (он был со мной) — and old Curdie (и старый Керди) — and George (и Джордж) — and Platt and lots of the boys (и Плэтт, и многие /другие/ ребята). I tell you (я говорю вам) I do not never go near Alice (я никогда не приближался к Элис). Ach Gott (нем. ах, Боже), it is the truth I am telling you (я говорю вам правду: «это правда, /то что/ я вам говорю»)."
His voice rose to a scream (его голос возрос до крика; to rise — подниматься). The inspector nodded to his underling
"Take him away (уведите его: «возьмите его прочь»). Detained on suspicion (задержан по подозрению)."
tumble [tʌmbl], detain [dɪˈteɪn], underling [ˈʌndǝlɪŋ]
"Funny kind of joke! Do you care to say where you were yesterday evening, Ascher?"
"Yes, yes — I tell you everything. I did not go near Alice. I am with friends — good friends. We are at the Seven Stars — and then we are at the Red Dog — "
He hurried on, his words tumbling over each other.

His voice rose to a scream. The inspector nodded to his underling.
"Take him away. Detained on suspicion."
"I don't know what to think," he said (я не знаю, что думать) as the unpleasant shaking old man with the malevolent (когда неприятный трясущийся человек со злобным), mouthing jaw was removed (раскрытым ртом был удален; mouth — рот; jaw — челюсть). "If it wasn't for the letter (если бы не письмо), I'd say he did it (я бы сказал, что это он сделал это)."
"What about the men he mentions (что насчет людей, /которых/ он упоминает)?"
"A bad crowd (плохая компания: «толпа») — not one of them would stick at perjury (не один из них /не будет/ упорно лжесвидетельствовать; to stick at — упорно продолжать). I've no doubt (я не имею сомнений) he was with them the greater part of the evening (он был с ними большую часть вечера). A lot depends on whether anyone saw him near the shop between half-past five and six (многое зависит от того, видел ли его кто-нибудь рядом с магазином между половиной шестого и шестью)."

Poirot shook his head thoughtfully "You are sure nothing was taken from the shop (вы уверены, что ничего /не/ было украдено из магазина)?"
The inspector shrugged his shoulders "That depends (как сказать: «это зависит»). A packet or two of cigarettes might have been taken (пачка или две сигарет, возможно, были взяты) — but you'd hardly commit murder for that (но вы едва ли совершите убийство из-за этого)."
"And there was nothing (и не было ничего) — how shall I put it (как бы мне выразиться) — introduced into the shop (принесено в магазин). Nothing that was odd there (ничего, что могло быть необычным там) — incongruous (неуместным)?"
