I shook my head without replying.

"And how is one to get at the right things?"
"Simply, as I said just now, by conversation. By talking! By discussing a certain happening, or a certain person, or a certain day, over and over again, extra details are bound to arise."
"What kind of details?"
"Naturally that I do not know (естественно, что я не знаю) or I should not want to find out (или мне не хотелось бы разузнать)! Enough time has passed now (достаточно времени прошло теперь) for ordinary things to reassume their value (чтобы обычные вещи восстановили свою ценность; to assume — принимать /характер, форму/). It is against all mathematical laws (это против всех математических законов) that in three cases of murder (что в трех случаях убийства) there is no single fact (там нет ни единого факта) or sentence with a bearing on the case (или предложения, имеющего отношения к случаю). Some trivial happening (некие тривиальные происшествия), some trivial remark there must be (некое тривиальное замечание должно быть) which would be a pointer (которые могли быть быть указателем)! It is looking for the needle in the haystack (это поиски иголки в стоге сена), I grant (я допускаю; to grant — дарить; допускать, признавать) — but in the haystack there is a needle (но в стоге сена есть иголка) — of that I am convinced (в этом я убежден)!"
It seemed to me extremely vague and hazy (это показалось мне чрезвычайно смутным и неясным).
"You do not see it (вы не понимаете этого)? Your wits are not so sharp (ваш ум не так остр) as those of a mere servant girl (как /ум/ у простой девушки-служанки)."
