Некоторые из понятий, содержавшихся в этих источниках, имеют отношение к тому, что Вильям Хэлоу (William Hallo) назвал в своем анализе возникновения канонов согласно древним месопотамским документам «формированием канона в мирском смысле слова». Хэлоу приводит двенадцать характеристик формирования канона, таких как, например, появление общепризнанного свода документов и попытки объединить отдельные документы в единый стандартизированный текст. На мой взгляд, Хэлоу подчеркивает вышеупомянутый тезис о том, что в древнем Израиле не могло не существовать понятия канона. Как бы то ни было, догматические особенности и богословская уникальность Ветхого Завета, о которых пойдет речь в одной из последующих глав, свидетельствуют о том, что все сходства между еврейским каноном и небиблейскими канонами сводятся к ряду незначительных моментов. Многие сходства выходят на поверхность лишь тогда, когда мы рассматриваем более широкое определение канона, основной акцент в котором делается на стилистические особенности документов, а не на их богословские тонкости и не на недоказуемую гипотезу о том, что священные книги были сведены в единый канон много позже их написания.
