Никто из современников не мог соперничать с Тацитом в ясности и беспощадности изложения исторической перспективы. Напротив, для большинства их история Республики сделалась «месторождением» анекдотов — развлекательных или возвышенных. Естественная история Плиния Старшего содержит наброски характеров Цезаря, Помпея и Цицерона вместе с неистощимым набором более эклектичной информации. Квинтилиан в своем посвященном риторике трактате Об образовании оратора часто обращается к Цицерону и другим ораторам последних лет Республики, предоставляя бесценный источник цитат из произведений авторов, иначе оказавшихся бы совершенно утраченными. Так же поступает и Авл Геллий в своем многословном собрании эссе Аттические ночи. Светоний, автор бойкой Жизни двенадцати цезарей, оставил скандальные портреты обоих обожествленных полководцев — Юлия и Августа. Царем биографов, тем не менее стал Плутарх, чьи портреты деятелей поздней Республики стали наиболее яркими и узнаваемыми среди исторических произведений. Оживляемое поучениями и сплетнями повествование изображает падение Республики не как революцию или распад общества, в манере, присущей древним, а как драму честолюбивых и исключительных людей.
Произведение Плутарха, патриотически настроенного грека, демонстрирует тот пристальный интерес, который история Рима продолжала вызывать среди подчиненных Империи народов. Начиная со II столетия н. э. описывавшие падение Республики историки предпочитали делать это на греческом языке. Самым значительным среди них был александрийский юрист Аппиан, написавший подробную историю Рима и его империи. Его книга Гражданские войны является единственным дошедшим до нас повествовательным источником о событиях, начиная с трибуната Тиберия Гракха и кончая 70-м годом до Р.Х. Начиная с событий 69 года до Р.Х. и далее книга его дополняется произведением другого историка, Диона Кассия, писавшего в начале 111-го столетия н. э., когда римский мир вновь распадался на части. И даже когда Рим пришел к окончательному упадку, граждане умирающей империи продолжали оглядываться на этот период, сделавшийся уже тогда предметом древней истории. Среди последних авторов, затрагивавших историю падения Республики, следует назвать жившего около 400 года н. э. Макробия, чьи Сатурналии изобилуют анекдотами и шутками, с любовью извлеченными из анналов поздней Республики.
