Анатолий Федорович Добрынин (р. 1919 г.), безусловно, один из наиболее ярких и успешных послов за всю историю СССР/России. Выпускник Московского авиационного института, он был направлен в Высшую дипломатическую школу в 1946 г. Советник, а затем советник-посланник посольства СССР в США (1952-1955), заместитель Генерального секретаря ООН (1957-1959), заведующий Отделом стран Америки МИД СССР (1959-1961), посол СССР в США (1962-1986). На протяжении многих лет был дуайеном дипломатического корпуса в Вашингтоне. По мнению бывшего госсекретаря США Генри Киссинджера, партнера Добрынина по переговорам, «человек тонкий и организованный, обаятельный внешне и внутренне неизменно осмотрительный, Добрынин парил в верхних эшелонах Вашингтона с редким искусством. Сочетание незаурядного дипломатического таланта с апогеем подпиравшей его личные усилия советской геополитической мощи позволило Добрынину стать самым влиятельным послом СССР в Вашингтоне за всю историю советско-американских отношений». Добрынин был послом в Вашингтоне 24 года при шести президентах США — абсолютный рекорд среди глав советских/российских дипломатических миссий в этой стране как до революции 1917 г., так и после, включая Россию после 1991 г.
